If I could be a superhero and choose my superhero power, I would choose the ability to control the sun. But since I know that won’t happen (unless I am cast in the next Marvel comic movie) I have resorted to helping my couples determine the best time of day for capturing their photographs. Much of this is determined by the season but overall photographing the couple in the most flattering light is always my number one goal. I am so grateful to have couples who truly value my style of photography and often plan their wedding day around the best times to capture their photographs. They realize that their photos are all they will have to remember after their wedding. During the development of their timeline, they make sure to allot at least 45 minutes to an hour to take photographs after the ceremony and before the reception.

Sometimes things happen that can and will affect the timeline but I always try to prepare and plan post ceremony photographs to take advantage of every second that I have the couple to myself. This is when I really try to let my creativity run wild. Those are the moments that photographs are created that really show the love and emotion between two people that have decided to share the rest of their lives with each other.

A Lynchburg Virginia Wedding with Rebecca + Jeff

Last year when I had the opportunity to photograph Rebecca and Jeff’s engagement session I started really looking forward to their wedding. During the planning stages of the wedding, they had a few conflicts with the venue but kept me updated the entire time. They finally decided to exchange vows in the historic town of Lynchburg Virginia. My good friend Jeff Wilson joined me for the wedding and we both enjoyed our time photographing this happy couple. Our morning started out scouting a few locations around town for their photographs following the ceremony and from there we started preparations to shoot for the rest of the day. Below are just a few images from the wedding day. Congratulations again to Rebecca and Jeff!

A Crowne Plaza Wedding | Kai and Malik

I still remember my 2009 wedding consultation with Kai and Malik like it was yesterday! It was one of my most enjoyable consults. I really enjoy meeting with both the bride and groom because it gives me a chance to learn both of their personalities so that I can see just how much fun we are going to have on the day of the wedding. At the end of our consultation, I knew that this was a wedding that I would love to photograph.

I was happy when I received word, only a short time later, that they wanted to commission me for their wedding because I knew it would be exciting to document. As a prelude to the wedding, we had a great time at the National Harbor shooting their engagement session. I think we had more laughs then photographs that day.

Their wedding day arrived on September 25, 2010 at the Crowne Plaza in Rockville Maryland. Below are a few images from the day. A BIG congratulations to Kai and Malik!

This past weekend, I had an amazing opportunity to assist in shooting a wedding for Michael Clark Photographics. I always have so much fun at weddings when I am shooting with photographers that are just outright cool and good people. This one was no different as I had the pleasure of working with Natarsha Wright who has an amazing eye! As the day went on, we kept checking in with each other, doing a few comparisons which I think inspired both of us to keep pushing for more incredible images with this beautiful couple.

This wedding could not have played out any better for me. The venue was incredible. Dave and Talisa exchanged their vows at the beautiful Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg Virginia. Now because I did not have the opportunity to meet Dave and Talisa before hand, my introductions had to take place on the big day. As I walk to the grooms suite and proceeded to knock on the door, he opens the door and for a moment we have a brief stare down. He then says, “Yes you know me”. OMG this Dave! We went to the same high school (Riverdale Baptist) and were basketball teammates. Instantly we clicked and I knew the photographs would be that much better because of our connection. When I went back to the brides suite and mentioned it to Talisa, she just laughed, “Dave knows everyone!” Needless to say there were a few other people at the wedding that I attended school with as well. And finally to make the day that much better, the weather. The rain was forecasted to begin at 1pm which was the start time for the wedding. As it turns out, the clouds held back just long enough for us to finish all of our outdoor shooting. Here are a few images from Dave and Talisa’s wedding:

The Oaks Waterfront Inn St Michaels Maryland | 2009 Year in Review and Favorite Images | Washington DC Wedding Photographer

I have been a photographer for going on 10 years now and I have to admit 2009 was probably the most inspiring year I have ever had. I had the opportunity to connect with photographers around the would, I was able to travel to Tuscany Italy (which was something that has been on my list of things to do FOREVER), and I met some of the most amazing clients who I keep in touch with pretty regular through email and Facebook. 2009 also marked the year that I was given the opportunity to speak on several occasions to other aspiring photographers and that alone gave me the most rewarding feeling. I think there is nothing like being recognized by your peers not just in photography but anything you do in life.

So, in going through some of my photos from last year, I decided to post a few of my favorites. There are many more but this post is already almost a month behind so I needed to kick it in gear and get it going So here we go…

MY FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHY MOMENTS OF 2009

The first set of photos are of a wedding that I had the pleasure of shooting along with Michael Clark. It took place at The Oaks out on the Eastern shore of Maryland. This location also happened to be my favorite venue of 2009.

Ahhhhh beautiful Tuscany Italy, the perfect place for a wedding shoot. It was thousands of miles from home but it was so relaxing being in this environment. I love the Italian culture and the fact that the pace seemed much slower here, really allowed you to take everything in. I have to go back soon.

My first wedding of the year happened to be on New Years Day! I shot this wedding with my friend and fellow photographer Jeff Wilson. I simply love this image of the bride getting ready!

I photographed children on a few occasions in 2009. This first photo is one of my favorites for a couple of reasons. Her personality was so much fun!!! This also was the first time I had really used my 50mm f/ 1.4 lens and I just loved the results from it. This photo was actually the first photo shot that day. It set a pretty high standard for the rest of the shoot.

This was for an advertisement/promo.

Sometimes as a photographer, you just need to shoot for yourself! I was in downtown Washington DC to shoot for a client. After the shoot I was walking back to my truck and saw this rugby match. I thought it would be so much fun to shoot it, so I did! I was there about 30 minutes just practicing some different techniques. To me this image just shows the raw energy that these guys have playing this sport!

To all of the soldiers around the world who make the ultimate sacrifice, I and the rest of the Clark Bailey team thank you so much for all of your efforts. You truly are heroes for doing something that most don’t have the courage or fortitude to do themselves!

I am really excited to be photographing the wedding of Natalie and Brian in the coming days. This is something that they have been anticipating for such a long time and the day is almost here. A Beautiful Wedding in Fairfax Station Virginia

A couple of weeks ago Michael Clark invited me out to team up with him once again for a wedding in Fairfax Station Virginia. This ended up being a very eventful day!!! After shooting the preparation shots at two locations, we met back at the church for the ceremony. After the ceremony, we headed to the brides fathers’ house for some one-on-one photographs with the bride and groom. After that, we headed off to a beautiful wedding reception at the Ritz Carlton in Tyson’s Corner. The passion shared between the families and close friends was unmatched. This was a 12 hour day for me…but I enjoyed every moment of it!
